Office desks
Selecting office desks is often a cost & space planning driven solution with little regard for the distinct fuctional work typologies to be undertaken within the organisation. The one desk fits all approach is common. A single office desk size certainly aids space planning but may not necessarily deliver the most efficient results in terms of space usage nor, yield the most productive work environment. Companies readily accept that status dictates workspace size allocation but, are seemingly reluctant to allocate work space and office desks based on activity. Activity based allocation of office desks & types of work space based on functional needs may result in different types of work space and office desks being provided. Research suggests that this is particularly appropriate for knowledge workers who work both independently and collaboratively. |

Office design in Singapore – Greener Offices? |
|
Whilst some developers such as Mapletree are creating sustainable new office buildings are many tenants creating greener office spaces? Our experience as office designers is that, whilst many office space users pay lip service to interior design firms about their desire to create a “greener office environment” few actually “walk the talk”. Office layouts and office interiors that are “green” may not necessarily be more expensive to build than traditional office interiors however, they will almost certainly have lower operating costs in the form of energy expenditure. Often the stumbling block when “greening” an office is resistance to open plan working and privacy loss. Office layouts that are “open” often include a cellular office component with partitions that do not extend to false ceiling height. This is more energy efficient and saves fit-out cost. It is important to remember that an open office does not mean a complete absence of cellular offices. Commercial interior designers such as Sennex can assist companies find the right balance however it takes a willingness to change. This requires management buy-in and leadership.

Office Design in Singapore |
As a leading office interior design firm in Singapore, Sennex is well placed to advise clients on workplace design trends & initiatives. The fact is however that many Companies operating in Asia continue to adopt a highly traditional approach to planning the design & layout of their office space. Key drivers are hierarchy and status which invariably means a high ratio of cellular offices in relation to open work areas, Cellular offices are often a barrier to communication & corporate innovation and in addition to being less space efficient than open plan work environments are more expensive to build.
As professional design build consultants and office designers we recommend that, client’s wishing to enhance their organization’s effectiveness whilst saving office space and money in the form of both rental & fit-out investment consider taking down the walls! Importantly this also has positive implications for creating a greener office interior. The message is clear, an office layout that is largely open plan is cheaper to run, build and given the right organizational context, more productive in comparison to a cellular office layout. Isn’t a greener, cheaper & more productive office space worth thinking about?

It is hard to tell the difference between the initial concept design perspectives (see news) and the completed project photographs below....the site photograph below was taken on 12th March which shows the rapid progress that was made in the last 2 weeks of the project's lifecycle!

Completed 29 March 2010
